George Weah Wins Liberia Presidential Election

Retired professional footballer turned politician, George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman Weah, has won the Liberia Presidential election.

The 1995 FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or winner, succeeds President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, in a contest that completes the country’s first democratic transition of power in more than 70 years.

Federal Government Expresses Commitment To Return Of Chibok Girls

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has reiterated the commitment of the federal government to securing the release of the remaining abducted Chibok girls, and sending a clear message to the rest of the world that such criminal acts of abduction would not be condoned in the country.

Mr. Osinbajo said, “We want to be able to challenge men and women all over the world about this sort of behaviour, and this is one of the reasons why we are advocating that this kind of conduct must be met with the greatest possible objection and force.

“It is very important for us that those girls are returned; anyone who has a friend or child or anyone among the girls recognises that girls are more vulnerable than men, especially when they have been abducted by men stronger and older than themselves, and held in captivity for so long.”

“We shouldn’t accept it. We should condemn it for the cowardly and wrongful act that it is, and do our best to give succour to the ladies who have suffered this particular injustice.”

The Vice President stated this when he received a delegation of girl child rights advocates from various schools in Abuja, who were led by officials from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Save the Children International and the UNFPA on Wednesday in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to mark the International Day of the Girl Child.

He further said the federal government was working hard to ensure that all the remaining abducted Chibok girls are released and returned home safely to their parents.

3 Soldiers, 8 Others Arrested For Alleged Theft In Lagos

The police in Lagos have arrested 11 suspects, including three soldiers and one dismissed Airforce man, for allegedly stealing solar panels worth N100 million belonging to the state government.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, told journalists on Wednesday that the suspects had been on the command’s wanted list before they were finally arrested in Epe area.

Mr. Imohimi said that the three soldiers had been handed over to 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army for further investigation.

The CP said that the group had sold stolen solar panels from Epe, Sangotedo, Elerngbe and Badagry areas to buyers in many parts of the country.

“On September 5, at about 2 a.m, the seven suspects came in a truck with registration number LND 61 XQ, invaded Okemagba Senior Secondary School, Epe with three soldiers and stole 71 solar panels.

“They also forced the door of the container where the inverter batteries and accessories were kept and went away with it.

“Some of the buyers were traced to Delta, Anambra and Imo where one buyer was later picked up in an hotel and confessed to have received solar panels and inverters batteries from the suspects,” he said.

The police commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court after completion of investigation on the matter.

EFCC Arrests Four National Theatre Directors For Alleged EMBEZZLEMENT

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday arrested four directors of The National Theatre in Lagos for alleged embezzlement of government funds.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the four directors, including a woman, were picked up at their Iganmu office for allegedly diverting “huge sums” of revenue and statutory allocation into private use.

NAN learnt that the directors allegedly failed to remit revenues realised from the use of facilities at the National Theatre into the Federal Government Treasury Single Account, TSA.

According to sources, among government revenue allegedly embezzled were N24 million annual rent paid by Nigerian Breweries for its 20 branded kiosks and N9 million paid for the use of National Theatre during the “Lagos @ 50” celebrations.

NAN reports that the affected directors were whisked out of the promises after they refused to honour EFCC invitation for questioning in the office of the Artistic Director and Chief Executive of National Theatre, Tar Ukoh.

The intervention of Grace Gekpe, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, on telephone could not save the officials from being whisked away by the EFCC operatives.

Addressing an Anti–Corruption Rally earlier in the premises, the National Theatre boss vowed to stamp out graft in the agency.

“Culture must kill corruption before corruption kills culture “ said Mr. Ukoh who also oversees the National Troupe of Nigeria.

Reacting to the development, Henry Udubuisi, Vice President, National Theatre Chapter of AUPCTRE, said that the union was behind the management’s decision to get rid the Agency of corruption.

AUPCTRE is the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporationns, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services.

Mr. Ndubuisi told NAN that the union would give its support to the new management to cleanse the Agency of graft.

I go from everyone touching me all day to total silence.”- Lady Gaga Says She's Lonely

Lady Gaga opens up in a series of teasers from her upcoming Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two. The singer discusses everything from her infamous feud with Madonna through to her loneliness and health woes.

She even breaks down in tears of misery at one point because she’s got nobody to go home to.

“I’m alone Brandon, every night,” sobs the star, who split with fiancee Taylor Kinney last year."And all these people will leave, and then I’ll be alone. And I go from everyone touching me all day, and talking at me all day, to total silence.”

In another scene  she discusses the truth behind her widely reported feud with Madonna.

"The thing with, like, me and Madonna, for example, is that I admired her always. And I still admire her no matter what she may think of me,” she insists, while her friends laugh in the background."The only thing that really bothers me about her is…” before the clip cuts off.

How I escaped being shot on my birthday –Angela Okorie

Nollywood actress, Angela Okorie, celebrated her birthday lastweek and in a chat with Saturday Beats the actress revealed how she was almost shot on her birthday.

She said,

“I am grateful to God for life. I am a humanitarian and I am always happy whenever I give back to the society. That was why I celebrated my birthday with the underprivileged.”
“My brother was driving and since the road was rough, he had to slow down because of a pothole. All of a sudden, he just told me to bend my head in the car because I was not concentrating. By the time I would realise what was happening, some armed robbers had double crossed us and they alighted from their cars with guns. They approached our car and cocked their guns, ready to shoot. They almost shot us but before we knew it, some officers of the Nigerian Customs Service showed up from nowhere. They intervened and immediately, my brother seized the opportunity to zoom off. That was how we were saved.
“I believe it was God that sent those Customs guys to us because they were not on the road and they came out from nowhere. When I saw the robbers, I was scared but I had faith in God. I wonder what would have happened if God was not on my side.”

You Got No Proof I Gave You Herpes-usher tells a lady over 20million lawsuit

Usher  finally responds to $20million dollar Herpes lawsuit. The singer wants one of those pesky herpes lawsuits tossed out, because the woman suing him has no proof he gave her anything!

Usher responded to the $20 million lawsuit filed by a Georgia woman who claims he gave her genital herpes back in April.

In Usher's legal documents, he notes her lawsuit says nothing about whether she had been tested prior to their alleged sexual encounter. He says, "A previous sexual partner very well may have already infected her."

And, Usher says, she could have contracted the STD after their alleged encounter.

And he takes another shot, saying she assumed the risk of getting herpes by having "casual, unprotected sexual intercourse and/or oral sex."

It's interesting however to know that Usher did not attack the lawsuit by saying he couldn't have given her herpes, meaning he culd as well be carrying it!

One more thing- Usher's lawyer grouses the woman is suing under a pseudonym, claiming there's no cause for her to secretly file her lawsuit.

He however asked the judge to throw out the lawsuit, something likely never to happen.

Police Arraign Officer Who Let Suspected Ritual Killer Flee Police Den (photo)

The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed a police sergeant, Johnbosco Okoroeze, for allegedly aiding the escape of a suspected ritual killer, Ifeanyi Dike, from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Port Harcourt.

Okoroeze, who was also arraigned by the police before a chief magistrate’s court on two counts bordering on obstruction of justice and conspiracy, was remanded in custody for the alleged offences.

The Chief Magistrate, Sokari Andrew-Jaja, cautioned him  as he cried uncontrollably inside the court before his case was mentioned.

Punch had reported that the prime suspect, Dike, defiled, killed and removed the organs of one Miss Victory Nmezuwuba, before he was arrested and taken to the SCIID.

Okoroeze, who was the Investigating Police Officer, had removed the suspect’s handcuffs while he took his statements.

The victim’s father, Dr Ernest Nmezuwuba, who was also in the charge room at the time, had said he used candlelight while making his statements, adding that there was no power supply in the area.

The suspect was reported to have fled the SCIID under the cover of darkness and his whereabouts had remained unknown.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmed Zaki, had ordered the dismissal and arraignment of Okoroeze for criminal conspiracy.

The accused, who was brought to the magistrate’s court in handcuffs, cried profusely on the premises.

“What have I done to myself? What did I do? Call my wife for me,” he said.

The charges read, “That you, Johnbosco Okoroeze, on August 19, 2017, at about 8.30pm at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Port Harcourt, in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District, did assist one Ifeanyi Dike, who is to your knowledge guilty of the offence of murder of one Chikamso Nmezuwuba, aged eight years, for rituals, to escape when he was to be detained for prosecution, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 322 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

“That you, Johnbosco Okoroeze, on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district, did conspire with a suspect, Ifeanyi Dike, and allowed him to escape from prosecution to prevent and defeat the course of justice, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 126 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria 1999.”

The chief magistrate observed that while the first charge could earn Okoroeze a life sentence if found guilty, the second charge could earn the dismissed police sergeant a seven-year jail term if found guilty.

Andrew-Jaja, who immediately declined jurisdiction of the court to handle the matter, directed the court registrar to transfer the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The chief magistrate then remanded the suspect in prison, just as he adjourned the matter till September 14, 2017 for adoption of written addresses.

Meanwhile, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, said one of the sponsors of the prime suspect, Dike, had been arrested.

ASUU,VCs Reject 120 Cut-Off Mark For University Admission

Some Vice-Chancellors and the Academic Staff Union of Universities have rejected the decision of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to peg admission cut-off mark at 120 for universities and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

ASUU said the action, which it described as a “sad policy decision,” was in tandem “with the dream of the present government to destroy public universities in the country.”

Most of the vice-chancellors Punch interviewed on the issue maintained that they would not lower admission standards in their respective varsities.

The vice-chancellors stated that the decision would add no value to the nation’s university system.

For instance, in a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, on the issue and released by his Media Assistant, Mr. Sunday Saanu, on Thursday,  the premier university stated that it would never admit any candidate that scored 120 in the UTME.

The statement added, “It should worry us as patriots that candidates who scored just 30 per cent in the UTME can be admitted into some of our universities. Yet, we complain of poor quality of our graduates. You can hardly build something on nothing. The consolation here is that since JAMB started conducting this qualifying exam in 1978, UI has never admitted any candidate who scored less than 200 marks out of the maximum 400 marks.

“This translates to a minimum of 50 per cent. This remains our position as an institution aspiring to be world-class. Reality is that only about four other universities in the country have such high standard. To that extent, apart from being the oldest, we are an elite university in the country at least judging by the quality of our intakes.’’

Detroit Man Who Spent 25 ears In Prison For A Murder He Didn't Commit Files $125m Lawsuit

A Detroit man who served 25 years in prison for murder based on sham evidence has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $125million.
Desmond Ricks was released in May after making the extraordinary claim that Detroit Police framed him for a fatal shooting that killed Gerry Bennett outside a restaurant in 1992. A judge reviewed the evidence and he was exonerated.

An analysis of two bullets from the victim shows they don't match the gun that was offered as the murder weapon at Ricks' trial in 1992. He was accused of shooting a friend outside a Detroit restaurant and sentenced to at least 32 years in prison.

Attorney Wolfgang Mueller says Ricks was a victim of 'horrific' misconduct. He filed a lawsuit in federal court Wednesday on behalf of Ricks and two daughters.

According to Daily Mail, the suit names two defendants who are retired Detroit police officers. David Pauch was the evidence technician on the case. Donald Stawiasz was the officer in charge of the investigation that led to Ricks' wrongful conviction.

The lawsuit argues that the duo framed Ricks by fabricating bullet evidence — swapping out the bullets taken from the victim's body with bullets test-fired from a gun belonging to Ricks' mother.

At trial, prosecutors said a gun belonging to Ricks' mother was used in the slaying. But tests on bullets still in police storage eliminated any connection.
Ricks worked with a team from University of Michigan law school and a gun expert. They claimed Detroit police framed Ricks for the slaying with sham evidence — bullets that didn't come from the victim.
'I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I had nothing to do with this,' Ricks, 50, said, referring to the shooting of a friend outside a burger dive.
'They switched the bullets on me,' he said.

He likely will benefit from a new Michigan law that awards someone who is wrongly convicted $50,000 for each year spent in prison.
